How to display products and catagories when customer is viewing a sub-menu?

What is happening is we have sub-categories that have both products and further sub-categories and the user only sees the products, not the other sub-categories and the products. Here is an example - there are two sub-categories as well as parts listed in the first level down (from top) category.
One can go to the side menu and see the sub-categories, but they are not visible in the top - unlike this sub-category which only has sub-categories
What have I forgotten to do? Other than spend time reading the manual (RTFM) which I did and didn't see an obvious solution.

That may well be a bug, in the nested categories code.

I've just run a test on a new Oz server, with a migrated osCmax 2.5.3 website (3500 products).
It is using a custom version of the fallback template and a test product shows up under the sub-categories.
To illustrate,
Catalog » Brother » Brother Ink Cartridges
Contains a list of sub-categories plus one product - all displayed correctly.

Looks as though you have an issue specific to your environment, perhaps osCmax 2.5.4 in particular.

Postscript: I've now noticed a previous test - I'm beginning to wonder if I spotted this sometime in the past and applied a patch..

As for a bug, it may be because I went from an early version of oscMax to 2.5.4 via a group of upgrade scripts and they were not perfect in function, which I spoke of a while ago in another thread...
And I don't keep good notes so it would be difficult to restore the site from a clean copy of 2.5.4. I may be the author of my small problem then. I'll dig a bit in the code and see if anything pops up.
