It was fine in preview but the "update" button didn't respond.

So I went back and took out this line :

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></FORM></TD></TR></TABLE>
This time it worked but I don't know why.

What is it about the category description box that won't accept that line of code. What does it all mean?

That line ins closing all your html tags. Not sure what the trouble is, I would have to look closer at the output. View the source code in your served pages with and without that line, and compare the differences. It is a good place to start...
