While trying to login on I often get it come up as an un-known account but if I refreash the page the login works. This happens on both the catalog and the admin.

Have I configued something wrongly.

It would seem that this only happens when ssl is enabled.

I found the problem.

It is a problem with IE6 and ssl

The fix is to add to the httpd.config on the server

SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown
downgrade-1.0 force-response-1.0
