I can see I have a combination of two problems. One may be this one, and the other I have posted elsewhere of Paypal not returning the customer, which would create the order. If I fix THIS bug, I will lose any Paypal orders I do get. So I need to solve the other problem first.

Not returning your customers is irrelevant with the IPN mod... It sends your store the order whether or not the customer returns to your store. That is the whole point of IPN. If paypaly is not sending your store the IPN, that is a paypal account configuration issue, not an osCMax issue, and you need to go through your paypal account and set up IPN.

Michael, I have problems with Paypal IPN, in that Paypal does not appear to be sending the store the IPN when a payment is made. I think our orders are only being updated when a customer returns to the store. I put a transaction through on our live site and nearly 2 hour later, the order is still "Preparing [PayPal IPN]", even though a payment has been made.

I'm prepared to accept this is a Paypal config issue as all other parameters on the shop seem to be set OK. I notice you state above that "you need to go through your paypal account and set up IPN", yet I'm sure I've seen posts from you before where you have said not to set any IPN settings and return URLs in Paypal, as it knows what to do from the parameters passed to it from the shop.

My shop's Paypal Account currently has IPN preferences set to OFF. If indeed it needs to be set to "ON" what is the correct URL to use in this setting?

Hello Tech Matters, Sure.
FIRST, BACKUP your /catalog/includes/modules/payment/paypal_ipn.php file. I mean it. Once you have that set aside go
here to get to my post. You are going to need to go here and download the item that is marked just v1.4. It has a repaired paypal_ipn.php file. Open that file in an editor and go to Bugtracker and make the edits in comment number 289 by ktough. Don't worry about the link on that page, you just need to make the edits written in the comment. Now go hereand make sure the edits are in the new paypal_ipn.php file. Copy the modified file to the location in the instructions.
That should do it. You do NOT need to set the IPN to 'ON' or define a url in Paypal.

Hep me please! I've just done a new install of OSCMax v2.0. I'm still
having paypal IPN issues that I've had trying to use osCommerce. The
current error is:

I'm hoping that this is a legit problem that paypal is having?! I've
followed all of the paypal configuration methodically and have just
finishing a test following Mushrooms post #27.
Reading through the dozens of paypal ipn issues, can anyone tell me
for sure if there really is a problem using/testing encryption with
the sandbox accounts? All my .pem files are in place and the correct
ID's are configured in the payment module.
I'm also not getting any email dumps due to the error which suggests
that maybe paypal's sandbox is really down. But then, maybe there is
still something wrong/missing with the paypal ipn script?

Hi,
Is that PayPal module the only payment module you have active?
If so go here and look at #14. He had to comment out another line that seems to have something to do with feeding an invoice number.
Off hand, the bugtrackers I installed were 157 and 145.

Yes, paypal is my only installed payment module. I just followed the other thread and commented out that line but still get the same 5302 error from paypal and no email dump. Will keep at it by trial and error since it seems it must be somewhere in the code!

Is there a tried and proven to work copy of paypal_ipn.php anywhere that I can get or would that potentially introduce a new set of bugs?!
