Can't reach checkout_success - please help

My site as configured never ever reaches the checkout_success.php display.
I have tested extensively with Paypal and using the low-tech check/money order options and always get redirected to checkout_payment.php after clicking Confirm Order on checkout_confirmation.php, when I should be done. The shopping cart never empties. Basically, I'm not getting to all the stops in checkout_process.php.

Please help if you can. I've hit a brick wall and have no idea how to fix this problem.

Quick checks ...

Do your products have a physical weight?

Do you have sufficent stock to allow checkout?

Are your products in stock (ie. not pending - date <= today on product page)?

all yes's = the customer can check out OK with Paypal but then when they click on "go back to Unplanned Peacock Studio" it takes them to the shipping page again and their cart doesn't empty and the items don't come out of my inventory.

Okay - which PayPal module are you using?

IPN - make sure you have set the url correctly in PayPal.

Non-IPN - goto PayPal - click profile - Website Payment Preferences - set auto-return to on and put the url of your check-sucess page.

Not completely sure this will have any effect - but worth checking ...

I am using Website Payments Standard -

IPN is http://www.unplannedpeacock.com/cata...ut_success.php

I've got set preparing status to Paypal IPN
Acknowledged order status to default

I hope I'm just doing something really stupid so it is easy to fix

It also does the same thing if I use Paypal Standard with the autoreturn - it autoreturns me to the checkout_shipping page.

Should I have the return on something other than "default"?

Tangwystel did you ever find a solution the check/money order issue? I'm trying to figure out a fix as well...

pgmarshall brought up a possible fix for using cash on delivery as a cover up for the check/money order - but let me know if you have something.
