Product images not showing?

I know there are a lot of posts about images not displaying and believe me I have read a lot of them. However I can't find the solution to my problem so I thought it time to ask, so here goes..

I uploaded a product image to the images folder then tried to add the product in the admin panel. When it comes to selecting the image I can't enter anything into the box next to the browse button and when I select the browse button it will only let me see files and folders on my hard drive. If I choose the file on my hard drive that is also in the images folder on the server the name appears in the box but no path or other characters. The image does not display when previewed or saved to the catalog.
The permissions are set to 777 for the folder and 644 for the image. The path is correct in configure.php.

Any ideas will be very much appreciated.
