Error while modifying "Welcome Guest!" greeting

I tried to modify my home page by removing the "Welcome Guest!" message. I received a message "TEXT_GREETING_GUEST" when I modified the greeting. The modified greeting didn't show up on home page. can any one suggest what I am doing wrong here.

I modified includes/languages/english.php file

I use oscommerce cart.

I have tried commenting out the whole define statement and adding my comments. Then this error shows up:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/magazinetown/www/magazinetown.com/includes/languages/english.php on line 304

How do I correct this? Any suggestions?
