Default setting up taxes from STATE to COUNTY

Hi,

I need to figure out what the best way would be for me to set up the taxes so that if taxable goods are delivered in the state of Florida, the customer can select their County's sales tax rate.

I need to know what info goes in tax zone, tax class, etc.

I've tried different combos and when I get to the checkout, all of the county's tax rates were added together and charged automatically during checkout.

Is it possible for the customer to be able to select their county in Florida, or is this also set up with the Shipping Address? If it is shipped to Florida, will tax automatically be charged.

i'm kinda confused on how the entire tax thing works, so I'm having trouble figuring out how to set it up to do what I need. Please help if you know anything about this.

Thank you.

Sure! Glad to actually be of help to someone. I'm usually doing all of the 'asking'

Okay, Basically, you will be making the county a part of the state.
For example, in my case, I have to charge sales tax to orders delivered to Florida--each county has it's own surcharge rate, so I entered the state of Florida like this:

Florida, Alachua County
Florida, Baker County
Florida, Calhoun County
Florida, Escambia County
Etc.

This way, when the customer enters in their state during checkout, after they click on continue, a message will pop up telling them to select from the drop down menu their state--they are listed in abc order, so by putting "Florida, County", it lets them choose their state and county together.

It is a bit tedious to do this. It took me a while just from having to enter in 68 counties.

Step 1: Go to Admin

Step 2: Click on Locations/Taxes

Step 3: Click on ZONES (this is where you will enter in the name of your state and each county.)

Step 4: For Zone Name: Type in 'State, County'

Step 5: For Zone Code: Type in 'County, State'

Step 6: Select United States

Step 7: Repeat Steps 4-6 until all counties have been added.

Step 8: Click on TAX ZONES

Step 9: For Tax Zone Name: Type in 'County'

Step 10: For Tax Zone Description: Type in 'County'

Step 11: After clicking "update", you will need to click on the name of the tax zone you just entered to get to the subzone page.

Step 12: Now, you will select the country, and the state, county from the drop down menus.

Step 13: Repeat steps 9-12, until all counties have been added.

Step 14: Make sure you have a tax class listed for TAXABLE GOODS (something like that)

Step 15: Go to Tax Rates and enter in the rate for each county. Be sure to put in a different priority number for each listing or the taxes with the same number will be added together and compounded.

Note: When you type in the description for the TAX RATE, that text will actually appear in the shopping cart checkout page, so make sure you type in something that you want shown. For example, I put whatever the sales tax was so that during checkout the customer would see the Subtotal, Shipping, Sales Tax %, Total, etc.

So for description, I would recommend to put: 7% Sales Tax

Anyway, sorry so long. It really is simple, but tedious due to all the data entry. Let me know if you need anymore help.
