attempting upgrade 2.1 to 2.2

hello--
I have not deleted my install directory in 2.1--just renamed it.

We have the OLD version running ok on our site.

We want to do everything through PAYPAL now so as far as I can tell this means an upgrade to at least 2.2. (question1/2: am I right?)I've downloaded the contributions related to this and am ready to figure this out.

question1- we've added a lot of custom contributions to the 2.1. If we upgrade, are many of these now built into the 2.2 version? Or do I manually redo all these?

question2- are there any better-clearer--more dumby proof instructions for the upgrade other than "now copy your database into the new database" WHAA? This feels like "Now fly your spaceship to Mars". I know that there are some steps in between. Your install directions are REEAALLY clear on this site do you have something for the upgrade install?

question3- is there some easy way to keep my customized look to the site without re-hand coding it all?

i m afraid not, catch 22 here, customize the stock product = satisfaction but you loose the so-called support aka upgrade option to a great degree.

i would recommend keeping a track of all the modules you have installed, add them once you have the upgraded version up and alive
