Cart stays full after credit card processed

I was able to the my cart to process payments (in test mode) through Authorize.net using test credit card number I was given by Authorize.net. BUT the items purchased stay in the cart after the card has been processed. Shouldn't they have been removed after the purchase. Any ideas how to correct this?

Oh - and I'm not receiving any e-mail confirmations, either to me as the purchaser or me as the website owner.
