Category box numbers in brakets

how to get rid of the quantity which comes up in brackets in the category box?

I would like to just list the categories and sub categories, without the number coming up in brakets.

There is an option in the admin interface that lets you turn off the category counts. Go into admin, then look for Configuration > My Store > Show Category Counts.
