Default root access

I have followed the installation instructions including the directory index statement mod.

I would like to access my catalog directly via the url and not via url/catalog

Can I simply move the .htaccess file that is in the catalog dir and stick it in the root of the site?

no.

move all the files and dirs under the catalog dir to your document root. then change the configure.php files to reflect the new file path...
