what steps do I have to go throught o restrict shipping to US addreses only?

Go to locations / taxes in the admin panel, delete the countries you do not wish to ship to.

Faster way? Use phpmyadmin or heidisql to connect directly to the database server, and do one mass delete of the undesired locations.
