Images

I am using 2.2 MS2 Max Load.

I can't seem to find anything here or anywhere else that answers a couple of basic questions:

1) When I add a product through the admin panel, and upload a picture, is that all I need to do as far as providing the needed images for the product? IOW, does the system automatically create the smaller images needed (thumbnails, etc)?

When I upload an image, it only goes into the catalog/admin/images directory, not the catalog/images. I still have to manually upload the same image to the catalog (actually, it's 'shop' in my case)/images folder to get it to show up.

2) What is the images_big directory for?

I guess I would just like to know what each of the various image folders is for, and how one should go about getting images in each.
