MAX uses BTS
But others over at OSCommerce prefer STS.
some say tomahto, some say tomayto... some say potahto, some say potayto...
I say learn what you need and then use that. In MAX you learn BTS, then you learn how to make BTS work for you. If you are working on your own store, there isn't that much you will need to learn other than what you need to learn to customize your store to your needs... If you are going to build stores for others, then you can learn what you need to make the system more customizable for you.
But the key is to learn what you need to know for what it is you want to do, and when it comes to Max, that means learning BTS enough to know how to trick it out for your (or your clients) needs.
In my case, it meant learning ajax enough to be able to add feature sets that were webby 2.0 to the stock BTS.Not so much to change the basic look and feel of the store, but to change the UI functionality so that certain things happen in ways that make the user experience smoother.
