Default Halo! I'm Stuck in step 10!!! >_< ERGENT!!!

Hi all, nice to mee you and I'm new to here...
Please give me some step by step help since I'm totally new to php and MySQL...

10. Add to your DirectoryIndex statement and include the following :
default.php index.php

This can be done in the Apache httpd.conf file if you have root access, or can be done in a .htaccess file in your /catalog directory.

I don't really get what it means.... do I simply creat "default.php" and "index.php" under my main directory?
And what does that do with the .htaccess file???
Please provide some detail step by step procedures.....
ERGENT ERGEN!!!
A million Thanks!

Step 10 is there to get your webserver to recognize the file default.php as an index page. The instructions tell you to either edit your DirectoryIndex statement in the httpd.conf file if you have root access to the server, or to create a .htaccess file in your /catalog directory that contains the DirectoryIndex statement.

You are reading the Quick Start Guide which is for advanced users. To get a better explanation, read chapter 4, the detailed installation instructions. This is for less advanced users. It explains how to create a .htaccess file with the DirectoryIndex statement.
