Default Sessions as files vs. in the Database

A couple questions,

In reference to the install choice of storing them as files or in the database. What are sessions?

Are they just temp files created during the use of the site?

If so, is there maintenance I need to be doing?

Are there any drawbacks to either selection?

Sessions are the way PHP keeps track of what is going on, where. There are pros and cons to storing them as files or in the database, but I generally store them as files.

No maintenance required.
