    Default DirectoryIndex file not working!!

    Hi,
    Can someone please help.
I created a file using a plain text editor with the following line:

    DirectoryIndex default.php index.php

This was saved as htaccess.txt uploaded to /catalog and renamed.htaccess. The way I read it this should have pointed the browser to the default.php file but it still shows the server in all its glory. Emptying the cache made no difference.

You may not have permission to use .htaccess. Check with your host to see if you are allowed to use it.

Also, just checking, but you are running apache as your webserver correct?

    Thanks for the reply.

I have used .htaccess with no problems to create password protection for folders, so permissions must be ok.

The webserver is by Zeus Technology, however the hosting company claims that all apache scripts should work without trouble.

    Update:
I have solved the problem by changing the default.php to index.php as described in an older post.
I would still be interested in finding out why the .htaccess method would not work.
    Anyone, any thoughts?

This would be something to take up with your host for clarification. Server configs can range widely, and only the server admins can give you a definitive answer as to what is allowed and not.
