Problem with File Manager

I'm sorry if this has already been answered...I wasn't able to find a reference to this question on the forums.

After installing, I'm getting the following error message in the File Manager.

Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: [FILE IN QUESTION]

This instance of osCommerce is running in a shared hosting environment. Is there a way to allow the File Manger to work AND still allow write privileges for the user account?

In order for the script to write to files and or folders the folders need to be chmod to 666

if chmod 666 does not work try 777

however having it set to 777 is somewhat of a security risk
