Can't delete top demo categories

I am having trouble deleting the top demo categories on a new install. I can delete the sub cats and products, but the top cateories will not delete. I have done another install on a different server with no problems. Has anyone else had this difficulty, and waht was the resolution if any?

I just discovered I can't add new top categories, either.

I am new to oscommerce and I can't delete the top demo categories either. I ran the sql thingy from the contributions page and now the categories are not showing up on the admin side. However, every time I refresh the page on the catalog side there is a new set of categories that appears--some have to do with dvd/soft/hardware stuff, some of them are about health and fitness, some are about furniture, etc. I've added new categories, and those seem to appear in the rotation, but they do not stay on there consistently. What the heck!!?? Help!!

Ok, I think I solved my problem. I cleared out EVERYTHING and started the process over. At the beginning of the install uncheck the "include demo" info box!! Then run the top download, "Truncate Tables" listed on the following site:
