Default Manual configuration for osCommerce?

Does anyone have a default configure.php file that I can look at? Or is there a document on installing and configuring osCommerce by hand without using the install.php? So far I have been unable to get osCommerce release 2.2 up and running. I have read the INSTALL file, OSCdox_IMG0.6.doc and some threads on the forum. Here is a list of my current state:
System information
- Linux 7.3, Apache 1.3.23, mySql 8.3, and PHP 4.1.2 are installed successfully
Apache
- Location of web root= /var/www/html
osCommece
- Location of Catalog Dir= /var/www/html/catalog
- Location of Admin Dir= /var/www/html/admin
- (Also tried, Location of Admin Dir = /var/www/html/catalog/admin)
mySql
- I have been able to create the catalog database and import the default osCommerce sample date

osCommerce http://myhostsIP/catalog/install/install.php
- After setting the values requested and pressing continue the web page would just hang at Step 1: Database Import. So I thought it may be due to the fact that I already created and imported the data into the database. If I uncheck the Import Catalog Database then I make it to Step 2: osCommerce Configuration, however after entering the values and pressing continue this web page also seems to hang.

Thank you all for the help,
animal

Default This might seem harsh but blow it away and start again...

Rather than spend countless hours in a painful lesson in osC configuration the hard - almost impossible way (as I did without success more than once!!!) Just clean the slate everything including the database and use the standard install.

Goodluck
