Visitors checkout cart does not merge

Although a visitor to the store can browse and even add to the cart, he cannot checkout, but is presented with the create an account screen, then this message: Note: Your "Visitors Cart" contents will be merged with your "Members Cart" contents once you have logged on. This, however, does not happen. After the "visitor" creates an account successfully, he is brought back to the welcome page by name and does not login, and his cart contents are lost. Is there anything that can be done or adjusted so that it actually happens that the "Visitors Cart" contents are merged with your "Members Cart" contents? - Is there any way an unregistered customer can make a purchase?

I have an update to my own question: we have tracked this problem down to a pricing contribution we trying to implement. The "Visitors Cart" content merge with the"Members Cart" content after proper login worked before this. The questions remain, what happened here, what needs to be present for the merge feature to work, and lastly, can we allow an unregistered customer can make a purchase?
