Default Can't change a thing???

My store was installed through my cpanel........
I assumed it was done correctly but I keep getting that "can not right...change user permissions"error when trying to modify my pages.
I looked through the guide and as far as I can tell it isn't installed correctly(the items the guide says to change under document root install......are not changed).
Also I've looked in each folder listed under the permissions and can't find any numbers at all.
Do I need to install this myself or contact my host and get them to make the changes(or can I make them myself?).
Lisa

What files are you trying to modify? How are you trying to modify them? Are you downloading them to your computer and editing them and re-uploading? Or are you trying to use the file manager that is built into oscommerce (I dont recommend this - very slow)? If using the built in file manager, than I can guarantee it is a permissions problem, in which case, just use FTP to download and upload, and a text editor to modify...
