I'm using the authorize.net plugin with AIM. I have my shop setup to Authorize only. It's authorizing the purchase. But I don't see where to go in to tell it to capture the amount of the purchase after the order has come in.

You have to do that from your authorizenet customer panel (not osCMax).

So if a customer decides to call back to change something small on their order, causing the price to change, we have to log into authorize.net and change the price there too? I thought one of the benefits with AIM over SIM was to do all the order editing from one location? is this not true?
Yes you have to log into authorizenet. The point of this post is that the OP did not do an Auth/Capture, but just an Auth. To then capture, he has to go into his A-net panel and complete the capture. If he did an Auth/Capture initially, no further steps are needed.
Next, your assumption about AIM is not right. The point of AIM is not to do all order editing from one location for an administrator. The point is seamless, instant processing for your customer when they purchase.
If you want to do all order editing (credits, cancels) you would need to extend the AIM module and your order editor pages to have those capabilities.

michael_s thank you so much for that clarity! as I am new to this area. Not to take a twist to this discusions but just lastly... So what is the best thing I can do for declined transaction after a phone order was attempted? Meaning, is there a way keep track of the cart if the order did not go through initially or does the administrator have to ask the customer again for all the products they tried to order? Once this is cleared up, I think I'll be prepared to communicate that answer to my clients and supervisors. thanks! bh
The items will still be in their cart, so you can either login to their user account by getting their password, or you can set up one of several mods (master password, phone order) to allow you to login as the customer from your admin panel to see what is in their cart and process the order for them again.
