Well Michael,

I'm not sure if you got my PM or not. But, we are still not able to get it to switch. This doesn't seem to be a unusual problem but I never see the end answer. Is it a bad idea to just change the targets for the functions I need to be https?

Thanks again, and I will do what I said as soon as funds transfer. I thought about leaving some in there the othe day.

I would be happy to do a clean test install on your server if you like, just so I can see what is happening from scratch. Maybe I can pick up on a problem that you may have missed. (maybe not!)

My gut tells me this is either a server configuration issue or a side effect of a code modification somewhere. It may be hapening to others, but not on any servers I have worked on. I have installed about 12 new sites this week, all work correctly.

I am running or have installed sites on Linux/Apache, WinXP/Apache, Solaris/Apache, WinNT/IIS, Win98/Apache, and havent seen this particular problem. I would like to get a closer look.

Default OSC & SSL

I read this thread, but I am still not clear about the install of OSC.
Someone else here had said something about having a copy on the SSL server as well as the actual domain. Do I need to have 2 copies installed?

Thanks

webov,

For what it's worth, I switched to AAbox hosting and Mike did the install at no charge for me and it works perfectly. I was having problems between my old server and OSC. Mike has been a tremendous help to me on other issues as well and I would recomend his hosting completely. I'm in Florida and he is in Arizona, but this is the WWW so it really doesn't matter. For me, I wanted to make sales and tech issues were just getting in the way and taking up valuble time. If you want to see and example go to www.driedflowersRus.com and see how it's working. I'm very happy and my CC processing takes less than 1 second from when they hit finished. If I can help you in anyway let me know or if you have any questions feel free to ask.

John

Webov,

A lot of the tecnical problems with ssl depend on the server configuration, so as you have seen, to troubleshoot them without root access, is a living nightmare. I never did find out what the problem was on John's old server, because I could not get in there and look at the way ssl was setup.

Some hosts have SSL setup on a different machine in the network, or the symlinks are not setup correctly, so the SSL server cannot find the files it needs throughout the network. I have seen cases where a person needed two full installs - one in http space and one in the https space.

What specific issues are you having with SSL?

John - thanks for the kind words

Oh, just plain ignorance. ;->
I just want to make sure I am doing this the correct way.
I have OSC installed on 'mydomain.com', but I have gotten several answers about which way to install it. So . . . I'm confused.

I guess I will talk with my tech support guys on my server.

BTW, your hosting plans are a great deal.
If I wasn't a reseller with my own virt/host, I would jump on it in a second!

Thanks
I'll be back later with more confusing and mystifying questions and problems. ;->

Default ..and finally I see some light..

I've been trying to figure out how SSL works and if I'm supposed to upload to both HTTP and HTTPS - been really frustrated because there are so many different suggestions on this question.

This tread really cleared my horizon, thanks!

I'm seriously considering a switch to AABox, as my current ISP doesn't seem to be in full control regarding SSL.
But, I find AABox a bit slow - I'm located across the atlantic, and almost all the way up north on the European mainland, yes that's right, Norway.
My upcoming site will be dealing with norwegian customers exclusivly.

It would be interesting to hear what other european customers/users have to say about this, or maybe give me a tip about european providers that have offers like AABox's BizBasic-package.
The price is great and with osCommerce install included, it's a bargain!

Rgds,

Petter - Arktisk Pudder

Petter,

Well, your situation is certainly different and you may find someone who has put the time into that Mike has. If you are talking about the last couple days, it has been glitchy but I think that has been the internet in the US. I talked to someone In California that had been having problems with their site and I saw it on a few others.

Overall, I'm very happy with the setup and a lot of my customers are on the west coast of the US, so even though I'm in FLorida it doesn't matter.

One thing I can definiteyly recomend is Authroize.net with the AIM setup, which Mike was very helpful in making work. It takes less than a second from the time the customer hits the button to the approval. It works extremely well with OSC. Over 90% of my sales are CC so that is a big issue for me.

The big benefit to AAbox is Mike. You can probably find many hosting companies that OSC can work on, but this is a great deal. Also, if you find it running slowly, do a trace route. Sometimes it's not AAbox at all but something in between.

Realize that the US is in a situation that most of us have never thought about. Therefore a lot of internet usage.

If I were you I would look for someone closer to you as that only makes the most sense since you only sell in Norway.

Now, I'm curious what do you sell?

Actually, the site is running pretty fast for me today. I'm on a cable modem and it's pretty quick. Keep in mind I'm 2000 miles or so from it. Of course, that still much closer than Norway.

I can definitely tell differences at different times of the day. But, for weeks it has been running well until the last couple days, which, I don't think was the server's fault.

Hi John,

I would probaply be better off with a provider that is situated closer to, or in, Norway - problem is that the (few) providers here that claim to have a server-setup that works with osCommerce charge in the range between US$ 690.00 to US$ 719.00 + Tax (24%) for the actual install... Yupp, that's right. I'm waiting for feedback from my current ISP on the matter of SSL, as they have just installed a shared sertificate on the server - If by monday thay have still not made it work, I'm forced to get a new ISP.

For my store I've already made arrangements with VISA and Mastercard, as they offer a very cheap solution here (Mailorder-package), where I have to manually report in Card-numbers etc. This is how I'm starting, maybe if this turns out well I will convert to a live-verification system. The CC-module where some of the numbers are stored in the database and some are emailed to me will offer sufficient security from what I heard/read so far.

I'll try to do a trace to get a picture of how/where the 'signal' travels to my place.

Thanks for your input.

I'll be selling snowshoes, telescopic poles, avalanche gear and other things related to hikes in Arctic Powder.
