gif oder jpg or both?

Hi!
I want to show my product images with .jpg or with .gif - depending on the type of image. But it seems that I have to choose wheter to use jpg or gif in the admin panel. Is that true or can I modify the setting that my shop displays .gif and .jpg Product images?
