    Default Forbidden Error

    Hello everyone,

I hope my issue is easy. I think it is just a CHMOD premissions issue but don't where to look. I did the site install and it went well. Changed CHMOD premissions as per guide and the first thing I went to do was chage the Admin login and password. Listed below is what I got.
    Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /catalog/admin/admin_account.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Please help..

    Thanks

    Marc

    Marc,

Check your permissions via your favorite FTP app or through Cpanel. Make sure the folder you attempting to access is no higher than 755. Additionally all FILES shouldn't be higher than 644

    hope this helps

    Marc,

When the error page comes up, look at the title text at the top of the browser. Does it say "401 Authorization Required" or "403 Forbidden."

If it says the 401 error it is related to your password for that directory.

If it says 403 it's usually related to permissions.

To eliminate a username or password problem, open up your FTP app and browse to your admin folder, in this folder will be your .htaccess file. Rename this as .htaccess.old.

Try to access the page again, it should not ask for credentials, and see if the error still occurs.

If so double check your permissions for the folders/files.

*Remember to rename .htaccess.old to .htaccess after this so you don't forget to do it later.*

    Hi dudz,

It says 403 so I followed your instructions after I found that I had to unhide all file types in CUTE FTP. I renamed the .htaccess.old and it made no differance. I rechecked all permissions in each folder and I still have the same results... I would bet this is something stupid I am missing... I will keep working at it until I get it.. thanks for the help!

    Marc,

Did you change permissions with CuteFTP the first time? If not I'd log in to your CPanel or equivalent and use File Manager. I have seen on rare occasions that the permissions can't be changed via an FTP app depending on your host.

Also try temporarily chmod the folder to 777.

You can also attempt to contact your host and see what they say?
