Leaving admin to shopfront - Forbidden message

After leaving Admin area going to Catalog shopfront I get this..

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /catalog/ on this server.

Once I use index.php I am fine.

Obviously I am not doing something right here!

If you are on apache, you have directory listing disabled, which is a good thing to have. Just add the DirectoryIndex index.php default.php to your .htaccess file in /catalog and you should be fine.
