Default Product Listing Order

Is there anyway to change the order by which the products are shown. It looks to me as if they are in alphabetical order, and I have been able to manipulate some by supplying spaces before the name--an effective, yet not optimal solution.

Is there a column in the upload that I can change to set an order? Or some other way that can be done?

You could try a number coding system prior to the product name in order to get them to display in the order that you want. Note that if you use 1,2,3,4, you need to put 01,02,03,04 in order for them not to go below 100 etc.

or you can...

1) add a field to the products table called sort_order
2) add a field entry to admin/categories.php to accept and display sort_order
3) modify catalog/includes/modules/product_col_listing.php (or whatever you are using to list) to sort on the new field
