Help please! Warning: session_save_path(): SAFE MODE Restri

Hi there,
I am really new to os commerce and have been learning some basics to help a friend update her site. Suddenly we are seeing this message at the top of the home page

Warning: session_save_path(): SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 854 is not allowed to access owned by uid 0 in /home/virtual/site349/fst/var/www/html/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 127

Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /home/virtual/site349/fst/var/www/html/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php:127) in /home/virtual/site349/fst/var/www/html/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 76

AND when we try to log in to the admin panel we only see the same messages as well as:

I have no idea what to do - any advice would be most gratefully appreciated!!
