Product SKU based on options

Something that I'm sure is common is having a different sku code for each different combination of options. Example: Shirt, color: red, size: medium is product number 0135. Shirt, color: red, size: large is product number 0136. Is there any way to enter the products with hierarchical options, including associated product codes.

I see this as solving two problems. The first is the differing SKU codes. The second is where the subsequent options differ based on what the upstream options are. Example: a large shirt might come in blue, red, yellow and white. A medium shirt might come in only blue, yellow and white.

Is there any way to do this now? If not, would someone be so kind as to point me at the general area in the code that I ought to be looking at?

This is something that I have been chasing for the past 2 years and I'm finally managing to code up most of it myself (through cobbling together bits and pieces) - though still not complete.
It is complex.
See posts on "Option Types Feature" - I intend to incorporate "reference attributes" or one very similar. I'm now at the point where I could divert time to references/SKU, though I need to 'clear the decks' first.
I'm glad someone else can see the reasons for having this and its real necessity.
