Default Help with image resolution in customer view?

I am having problems getting what appear to be nice, clean graphics outside of the shopping cart to still look crisp inside the shopping cart. The images look like 2nd generation photocopies - loss of resolution noticeable with fonts.

This is the "Images" screen in Admin:

Small Image Width 100
Small Image Height (blank)
Heading Image Width 167
Heading Image Height (blank)
Subcategory Image Width 167
Subcategory Image Height (blank)
Calculate Image Size true
Image Required true

I changed "calculate image size" to false - but that messed up the sizing of some of the "new products" pictures at the bottom of the page. I tried putting in "100" for Heading Image Width and Subcategory Image Height so both parameters are the same as the image width and height, but that didn't seem to work either.
On the front page, I have 6 hyperlinked images that are 100x167 jpg files. If I size them less than that with the html code, they loose resolution.

Funny thing is that each of these images look pretty sharp in the Admin interface when putting them with category or product descriptions.

I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Fireworks. The default pictures are 100x167, web export 100 quality. The enlarged pictures in the popups, which look OK to me, are 200x334 at 300 dpi.

I've read through Dynamic MoPics at least once, with snippets repeated. I know its probably something very easy, but intelligent suggestions are highly desired.

Thanks in advance.
