    Default THinking about upgrading..

Ok, right now Im running a heavily modified version of ms2max .. I know it ver 1.7 and it has some issues. I've had a LOT of time invested in this site, and I know if I have to upgrade, its going to be a long road again.

What Im curious on is how much of 1.7 is compatible with the latest ver? Mostly the product database is what Im worried about, with about 2300 entries.

Will 2.2 play nicely with both google checkout and paypal? Any other concerns I should know about before I do this?

As you are heavily customized, you will have to go the manual route. The best way to do it is to create a test copy of your site and work on it off line so as not to cause any problems with your live site.

I find that on heavily customized sites, it is always easier to start from scratch with a base osCMax install, convert your template, and then customize/hack in your mods to your needs.

Then import your data after you have it looking the way you want. Once done, just replace the old site with the new.

Trying to upgrade a heavily customized store is really a nightmare for all but the most experienced, and even I will avoid the hassle if given a choice.

Thanks, thats what I kinda figured.. I set up a subdomain already to play with the test changes, and I'm thinking of creating a new template for the site to begin with. I got my old 1.7 working completely finally.. but im tired of the hassles like the ones I just went through cuz of the mysql 5 fiasco.

PS: Do you ever sleep? Seems no matter the time, your always on here posting. Almost as bad as I am on my sites.

One thing that's been a major headache for me and my clients is Product Attributes. In 2.0, the Product Attributes contribution has been removed and QTPro has been added instead. This means you can't have text box attributes on products for example, for customized products. Just something to be aware of. If someone doesn't do it first, I'm going to look into adding text field attributes to QTPro when I have time.

Other than that, 2.0 is a great improvement in every area.
