When I added a catergory the admin went to 'cant find page error' ( the wholepage) - other sections in admin working.. and what I added is in the website but cannot do anymore.. thanks for the help..

Try installing the admin panel again. Upload all the files again except the admin/includes/configure.php file.

Is this 2.0 RC 3.0.1? Is it a live store? If not, you may want to start from scratch with the newest version.

the file says oscmax2_rc3_0, would it better to have _1?
I am testing it out on local machine, could that have something to do
with it,, running php 5.2.0, apache 2, mysql 5

I am testing on the exact same versions of apache, php and mysql and don't have any issues like that, so there is something strange going on for you.

There are just minor changes in the 3.0.1 release compared to 3.0, you should read the change log to see if you want to update.
