OK, I have a clean install of osCMax, and have the following problem with EP:

OK, I have changed the path to 'temp/' to remove the 2nd '/' but I still get the same error:

chmod 777 /home/simplemi/public_html/catalog/temp

should take care if the issue...

Yes it certainly did, but what confused me, cpanel filemanager was indicating the permissions were already 777!

Never use cpanel filemanager... FTP and SSH all the way!
