Help with Paypal IPN. Not emptying cart, not sending email.

Can someone please help me set up the Paypal IPN. I've followed the Paypal setup guide by Ulrich Iserloh and everything works up to clicking the "Return to Merchant" button on the paypal payment page.

When I click the "Return to Merchant" button I get returned to the login page of the store. If I login again as my test user the cart still contains the previous items. Also I do not receive a conformation email from the website (but do get emails from paypal in the sandbox)

The orders do appear in the admin page though.

In the Paypal profile settings I have auto return turned off. And the IPN preferences are on with the return url set to http://www.mydomain.com/checkout_process.php (I have also tried checkout_success.php & /includes/modules/payment/paypal_ipn.php)

I have also tried changing the cookies setting in my config files.

I'm sure it's something simple that I've missed, but with so many variables to set I'm pulling my hair out now.

I also have CoD installed as another test and that works perfectly.
