Default Need Help with Warning Messages

I've suddenly run into some warning messages - even though we haven't made any changes to the site in weeks. All was working in the morning, but by mid afternoon we get the following:

    Warning: eregi() [function.eregi]: REG_EMPTY in /mnt/r0212/d00/s26/b0146f70/www/domain/catalog/includes/application_top.php on line 48

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /mnt/r0212/d00/s26/b0146f70/www/beachclocks/catalog/includes/application_top.php:4 in /mnt/r0212/d00/s26/b0146f70/www/domain/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 99

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /mnt/r0212/d00/s26/b0146f70/www/beachclocks/catalog/includes/application_top.php:4 in /mnt/r0212/d00/s26/b0146f70/www/domain/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 99

I read the stickies from last year about eregi and php5.3. Once I changed the php default on the host server from php5 to php4 via an htaccess "setenv PHPVERSION 4" command - and the site is now running fine again with no warnings. Yeay...

But now I get to my questions:

    1) Why would this happen without warning on 19/11/2010 when no changes have been made to the site in weeks and all has been running well in osCMax 2.0.3/4 for the better part of a year? Yes, Yes - I'll be upgrading to 2.5 when available... but in the meantime, why all of a sudden do I get php warnings?

    2) Will running on PHP4 create any other problems with osCMax 2.0.3/4 until I can upgrade to 2.5?

I know 2.0.4 is no longer supported in this forum, but any help here would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks...
    GEORGE

    George,

If things change without you doing anything then someone else has changed something for you! I suspect in your case your hosting provider has upgraded their version on PHP on their servers and this has overwritten your settings. Of course, the other time when things change it is a hacker - but it doesn't sound like that but might be worth just checking that you don't have any new files on your server etc.

    Regards,
    pgmarshall

    Thanks, pgmarshall.

Turns out my host provider did upgrade their PHP versions to 4.4.7 and 5.2.9 from 4.4 and 5.2.2 respectively... so I am less inclined to believe its a hacker.

Especially since changing the htaccess defaul to PHP4 seems to have cleared everything up.

But thanks for taking the time to send a response.

    George,

Thought you might need this info too that Michael sent me when I had the same issue:

The latest version of osCmax (2.0.25) and osCommerce (2.3) both take care of php5.3 compatibility issues. You will have to upgrade before php6, as the php function ereg is being completely dropped. Then the workaround for php5.3 will no longer work, and your site will completely break. The only solution is to upgrade to 2.0.25 or the upcoming 2.5
