Default Help, please! Can see customer's page but not admin's page

    Hi,

I'm trying to learn how to use osCMax for a future shopping cart I have in mind, so I have installed it to test it with XAMPP. The whole installation process has gone very smooth, and everything seems fine...except that I don't manage to access the admin page, and I can only see the customer's page. The address for the customer's page is http://localhost/catalog/, and the admin one http://localhost/catalog/admin/, but when the second one is introduced, no webpage is opened.

I'm new here, so I'm sure I have done a big mistake in the installation process, or I'm missing something here...Can someone help me?

    Thank you very much,

    Will

If you have installed on your local machine then it should be fairly easy to check.

Go to your XAMPP folder - normally something like c:/xampp/www/ or similar.

Open the catalog and check that it has a sub-folder called admin.

I am going to assume you are using v2.0.25 not v2.1 from the SVN ...

Let me know if your admin folder is there ... if it is then check for index.php in the folder. Also right click on the blank screen and view source (post back what you see)

    Regards,

Thanks for the prompt reply pgmarshall!

Yes, I'm using the 2.0.25v from the main website. I also checked that the admin subfolder was there, and that index.php was inside.

This may sound like a very stupid question but... what do you mean by "check on the blank screen and view source"?

    Again, thanks for the hand,

    Will

    Ok, I'm really stupid...

It has taken me several re-installations and a couple of hours, butI have been able to track down the error: I am writing down incorrectly the DirectoryIndex statement. The thing is, I am working using a Mac, files starting with a "." are hidden, and I was accessing to it using Terminal. Obviously, I was overwriting it wrongly.

Where should I write that statement? Anywhere inside the .htaccess file? Does the line need to start with a #?

    Thank you very much,

    Will

Check .htaccess and configure.php files - see wiki install document.

Sorry guys, I still don't see the appeal of installing locally on either WAMP or LAMP, when there are plenty of free online resources to use, which will more closely mimic a live site. Unless you don't mind a larger electricity bill, from running a server and a client machine.

    Thanks ridexbuilder!

I'm going to take a look at the docs you just pointed out, see if I can get myself through.

This is a bit out of topic, but I'm interested in what you just said "when there are plenty of free online resources to use, which will more closely mimic a live site". As I said, this is a whole new thing for me, so I was not aware of such an option. Could you be more specific? I was using XAMPP only because I wanted to learn how to use osCMax before paying for a server...

Hehehehe...Mac users are rare indeed, lol

    Thanks for everything!

    Will,

    .htaccess file ...

If the line starts with a # then it is commented out and will not be executed.
It can go anywhere in the file just don't split any of the other bits.
You may also need to rename from .htaccess.new -> .htaccess

    Hope this helps,

    Bah Humbug!

    Nothing wrong with WAMP/LAMP on a PC/MAC ...

Means you can do full development on a laptop anywhere ... you can even load your store onto a memory stick and run it from there.

Honestly these UNIX boys are so 1980s! At least Mac OS is Unix based!

Now that I've upgraded to a 3yr old dual core laptop, I may give it a go in a virtual machine, though 1Gb total RAM may struggle.

    Pgmarshall, ridexbuilder,

Thank you very much for your help! Everything works fine now, I can focus on learning osCMax. It is really a shopping cart to consider, with such an active community for support!

    Thanks again!

    Will

P.S: I don't know if the last post was banned or something, because I don't see it on the thread, but I was also asking if you knew of any free server on the web to upload the shopping cart as a previous step before full release in a paying server...

They change form time-to-time, just try a Google for: free hosting.
An advert. free one, with cPanel, is probably the way to go.
