smtp default settings

This has always been a question in my mind - is is necessary to install PHPmailer in order to get smtp working off the bat - or is there a simple adjustment to oscmax that we can do in order to activate smtp?

I'm trying to get my gmail email address working right way with a fresh install of oscmax.

the phpmailer add-on always does wonders got it working.
