Default database upgrade question

Just to be clear I am upgrade from osmax1.7 to osmax2 rc3. My question is when using mysqldiff do you import your old database (osmax1.7) into you new database (osmax2 RC3) or is it the other way around, you import you new database (osmax2 RC3) into your old database (osmax1.7)

Thanx everyone.

mysqldiff does not import anything. It creates an sql batch script that you need to run on a copy of the original database (old version 1.7) to upgrade it to the new DB structure.

Then once upgraded, you need to export the data from the old db and then import to the new database. You should not export the configuration table from the old db, as the config values are different in the new version and it will break things, but you should export all product, order and customer tables.

Ok I delete the database that I was working on and I am about to start over. Just to be clear when using mysqldiff. could you please tell me which database is the source and which is the target? If I understand this correctly the source would be my original database (old version 1.7) and the target would be my new database (osmax2 RC3), is this correct?

Yes. the source is the current db (1.7) and the target is the new one. It will then create sql that you have to run against a copy of your current db.

judoka, I totally understand your situation and the frustration you've experienced. I remember battling with MySQLdiff with only marginal success but I didn't want it to beat me so I stayed at it. But, I had a time line I wanted to hit for making my change over and I realized a couple things. First, I probably wouldn't use Mysqldiff again soon if ever so I wasn't using my time and energy wisely. Second, my database is a critical part of my site and I needed to know it was done correctly. While I hated to give up I focussed on the bigger picture and asked my web host, which was AAbox how much it would cost to just have them do it. On Xmas night 2005 Mike updated my database and I went live with Max 2.0. That was money well spent and I haven't had a use for Mysqldiff again either.

I didn't see your database question until after I read your "why" post, but I wouldn't have answered because I don't remember. FYI, you can search Google for mysqldiff and find info about it on other sites.

My thought is pay AAbox to do the database and put your time and effort into the other parts of your cart and you'll get more bang for your buck.

Good luck with your upgrade.
