OSC2.2 to OSCMax SEO URLS

So I was using Use Search-Engine Safe URLs in my oscommerce install and have now successfully migrated to a OSCMax setup. I have the rewrite mod working however unless I turn on the old "Use Search-Engine Safe URLs" my interlinks in my products don't work. I sell toners and link to the compatible toners from the genuine ones... I also link to colour inks from the black and vice versa...

So:

a) Can i simply run both as a stopgap until i fix all the links?
b) is there a way to automatically rewrite somethng in .htaccess to simply use the new format
c) would it be easiest simply to go through and redo all of the products?(700+ products with multiple links in each)
d) Can anyone think of any other way of fixing this?

I have just answered point a) and flicked the switch on both... it works... but it's not an ideal solution. It does work as a stopgap though

bad news is it bugs up... so i had to disabel the old se safe urls...

I'm open to any ideas.
