I am pretty new to webservers and web coding although not new to computers and some programming. I was a little nervous about trying to install OSCmax but the install worked fine. Luckily my hoster had the phpadmin already available from their control panel so the database setup was easy. I had never done that before either.
One comment: I think they should add the default admin login info to the install page. As you work down through the steps you hit the login page and I had to go looking for the default. Now I know its on the first documentation page but I didn't see that at first.
Now a question: This is about the .htaccess file. The install instruction say to creat .htaccess file and upload but I looked and there is already one there so that would overwrite the original one. I see there is a buch of commented out code but I did not see the line recommended from the install instructions. There is some code towards the bottom about setting the file path to /catalog but its not clear if I should do that or add the line from the install instructions or both.
A related question. I was playing around with oscommerce last week. I think osc installs with and index.html file in the root so you can access your store from www .yourstore.com. Seems like oscmax does not install with an index file above /catalog. Is there a way to set it up so people can use www .yourstore.com rather than www.yourstore.com/catalog?
