Articles not displaying properly

When I create an article in admin > Article Manager and make it active, it does not show up on the catalog pages. Text is missing and malformed. Screenshot attached.

Also, in article config, when I set Display New Articles Link = true, and click on New Articles in the catalog, I get a php error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/bigmoss/www/shop/templates/fallback/content/articles_new.tpl.php on line 49

Any ideas on how to fix? Mainly the first one. I did not see these in the BugTracker.

You first need to create an author...

Ah ok, that works.

One more thing... can an article be posted without being in a Topic folder in admin? I can't get it to work. I want a list of article titles to show on the catalog, not a list of article topics (or folders in admin).

Articles posted at the "Top" level (not in a topic folder) do not show up in the catalog.

Also, the "Article URL:" redirect is not working, neither with or without the "http://" in the admin.

Any idea why? The url redirect looks fine, but the page that loads in the new window is my home pagee, not the external url. Here is the url in the catalog without the "http://" in the admin:
