It works by default.
If you want to use the .htaccess feature, you need to read the docs in the module itself:

What doesn't work? Please be more specific in describing your problem. How about a copy of the url that is showing in your browser, or what about your SEO settings?

sorry for this newbie approach...not working
what i meant is that even with the default settings, the sid doesnt disapear, like so:
http://localhost/shop/product_info.p...1a6d8f545a9cf4
settings are as follows:
seo urls - enabled
url type - tryied both cname and rewrite
i have a cache directory and use cache set to true
anything else i am missing?
thanks,
Don.
SEO urls does not remove the SID. You have to do that with your cookie settings, .htaccess or your php.ini settings.
I think you misunderstand what SEO urls does.

i see. thought sid was part of it too. thanks for your help.
My seo URLs works with cname and the links are generated from the home page with rewrite, but:
The links do not actually work when I use rewrite.
I woulc prefer to use rewrite because the output is perfect any ideas?
You need to edit the .htaccess file in the catalog directory. It already has the rewrite options in it. Just uncomment them according to the directions, and of course make sure your webserver has mod_rewrite enabled, or it will not work no matter what you do...
