Text box for attribute

Im pretty sure there is a way to use a text box as an attribute but I don't remember how. Can anyone help me out?

Not in 'Max as standard, for many years and there's been extensive posts about this (Option Type Feature; OTF).
I did present an alternative a few months ago and more recently another poster eluded to having something working (but never returned).
