    Thumbs down Mopics .15

    Hi,

I finally got converted over to .15 after much trial and even more error - but things seem to be working now. My question is:

What do I need to do to get mopics working correctly again? I have all my big images in the big images folder, but have been uploading my small images into the main /images directory over time, and it's been working fine. Now, it doesn't seem to be identifying them with the big images. I've checked all my settings and they seem to be correct. Do I have to manually upload them to each product so they can be resized by mopics again? Is there another setting I need to enable besides the ones under Dynamic Mopics in the configuration menu?

Either move the thumbnails to thumbs/ (preferred) or remove thumbs/ from Mopics configuration in Admin. (poor).
    Simple.

I tried removing the /thumbs from the setup, because that is the arrangement I had before, and it didn't make a difference (which is why I am confused). I'll try moving everything to /thumbs now.

Another question - Should I actually be moving the large size photos instead of the thumbnail sized photos with the new mopics? In the past, I uploaded the thumbnail size via the product entry screen and uploaded my big_images via ftp. My understanding from the wiki is that now I can just upload the big pics into the thumbnail folder and they'll automatically get thumbnailed. Is that correct?

    Nope!

When you enter a new product ... you upload your original image through the admin panel. This will get scaled to the settings for image_big and stored in the image_big folder. At the same time a thumbnail will be created using the settings again and stored in the thumbs/ folder.

If you FTP them in you will need to make sure they are the right size before you upload.

    Talking Re: Mopics .15

In the past, you had to size the pics appropriately for both thumbnails (the main images) and big images. The thumbnail was loaded as the main image in Admin. and the large image required manual sizing/uploading to images_big/. This was a pain...

There are new settings in Images that govern the maximum size of the large images, plus the existing small image size setting(s). These are used to determine the size of the images when uploaded. Both image sizes are rescaled, from within Admin. and automatically placed into the correct subdirectories. Hence the recommendation to stick with default image locations.

Further note: There is now the option to have three different sizes of images in your shop/store. One for the infoboxes (normally 120), one for product images (thumbnails) [suggest no larger than 150px width] and the enlarged product images (remember not everyone has widescreen monitors nor uses high resolutions, hence the sensible defaults).

The Images settings do NOT work retrospectively, in terms of image size (only what is viewed). If you make a change where there are existing images then you will need to manually resize and re-upload the images, using FTP. See my short tutorial (website) on using Irfanview to batch process image resizing.

Be creative, just remember that the larger the image, the greater the bandwidth used and the slower your site will be for customers.

Note some of the above is included in the wiki: http://wiki.oscdox.com/images & http://wiki.oscdox.com/catalog

I've moved all my thumbnails to thumbs/ and my settings are this:

    Category Images Directory categories/
    Big Image Types jpg,gif,jpeg,png
    Thumbnail Image Types gif,jpg
    Big Images Directory images_big/
    Thumbnail Images Directory thumbs/
Main Thumbnail In "Thumbnail Images Directory" true
    Extra Image Pattern imagebase_1

and I'm still not getting the "click to enlarge" or any sort of enlarging happening.

    Check it out:
    http://www.unplannedpeacock.com/catalog/

I had this problem before (last version), which is why I was going to the main images folder with my thumbnails, it was the only way I could get it to work.

    Any thoughts?

    Quick check:

I tried to load a images_big file for one of your products:

    http://www.unplannedpeacock.com/cata...quakerBFLA.gif

Is not there - therefore you have either got your files in the wrong place or have failed to upload the file. Without it being there the large image code will not load.

heh, you happened to pick one of my early products that I don't have a larger pic for - plus, all my larger pics are .jpg. That was just bad luck since I've just uploaded 400+ files to that folder

(dang, every time I try to link to a page here it goes to my "welcome please sign in" page. I don't know what is going on with that.)

Try Cardinal or Amazon under Fingering Weight, Peacock Sock (sorry, tried to provide a direct link) - I KNOW those both have image in both /images_big and /thumbs

    Post Re: Mopics .15

Now, I remember seeing this site before (massive images!)
Yep, PGM is correct here is another example:
    HTML Code:
    http://www.unplannedpeacock.com/catalog/images/thumbs/shakti.gif
    Image dimensions: 200px × 200px (scaled to 120px × 120px)
Size of file: 30.34 kB (31073 bytes)

Either, you need to resize all your thumbs to 120px wide (and so reduce the Image size of the thumbnails) or increase the setting for Product Image to 200px (poor souls navigating your site) .

The above image should have a corresponding 'full-size' (yikes!) image at
    HTML Code:
    http://www.unplannedpeacock.com/catalog/images/images_big/shakti.gif
Note: it is unusual (nigh, strange) to use GIF for photographs and I seem to recall that the rescaling will not take place for this image type due to colour-shift issues (not 100% certain though).

If it was me, then I'd use Irfanview to take your heartache away - job done in 5 minutes flat, even if hundreds of pics.
