seo urls and xampp on local

I have been trying to work with and test a different version of ultimate seo urls but I can not even get the one that comes with oscmax to work with xampp. If turned on without the rewrite uncommented in the .htaccess file then you get an object not found only when clicking on categories. If you uncomment the correct re-write rules in htaccess file then you get a server error 500. I have googled this and others have this problem as well but I have not found a solution after reading thru a bunch of forums and posts.

I turned on rewrite in the httpd.conf file in xampp and made sure it states allow all everywhere in that file. Still same error. My test shop works great using xampp as long as ultimate seo urls is false and the rewrite is not uncommented in .htaccess.

Now I know all the smartest people are here so I am now asking on this forum.
