Deleting Category Images

I'd like to delete category images and free up the space they occupy. There are two contribs out there to delete the image file itself from admin/categories.php but that only results in a broken image link in the category header.

Does anyone know of a way to just drop category images altogether so that space they're designed to occupy can be reclaimed? My guess is that it needs to done in index.php but I think it may be more involved than that and I'm still a newbie!

I do not have category images on my site. I just have images required set to false in Admin. Under images
