How can In get around this ebay style shipping request

HI,

I have a client who sells things to everywhere and they all have different shipping prices.

One cannot use the weight, postal or per item ptions as they do not do what he wants.

He is used to selling on Ebay where..

the customer buys,
the store is notified of the sale,
the store lets the customer know the shipping cost,
then either
the customer inserts this or
the store adds the amount to the transaction

then the invoice is then generated and sent.

I've told him he he will have to compromise somewhere, but his mind is stuck on that concept.

What is the closest compromise one can get to that principle.
