Default RE: How do you create a test site?

I don't know how you have set up your server so this advise is generic.

Option 1:

1) create a subdomain (ie: storetb.mydomain.com )
2) install oscMAX in the new subdomain (giving it it's own database)

Now you have a testbed site. You need an ISP that will allow multiple databases and the creation of subdomains.

Option 2:

1) get a real cheap host ($5/mo or less)
2) set up a domain similar to your primary ( mydomain.com => my1domain.net)

install the testbed shop there

Option #3 - LOCALHOST...... Install a LAMP (Linix) or WAMP (Windows) or MAMP (Macintosh)...Google it or search this site for may suggestion. EasyPHP and even WOS 1.1.0 (Webserver On Stick) can be installed on a USB hard/thumbdrive and move to PC to PC.....WITHOUT INSTALLING ANYTHING IN THE HOST OS.....

When you move to you live site - use the admin "backup" feature - copy the files (including the backup file) - changed 2 files or run the "install" to create the CONFIGURE.PHP files for your server. RESTORE your BACKUP file.

Done!!

You need to dump the data from the existing db, using mysqldump or using phpmyadmin. Then import the dump into the dev database from the command line or using phpmyadmin.

That will get your data into the dev db.

The rest is academic. Copy your live site images to the dev site images directory.
